Bryant Charles Gumbel was born on September 29, 1948, in New Orleans. His father Richard Dunbar Gumbel was a judge while his mother Rhea Alice LeCesne was a clerk. Both his parents were of Louisiana Creole origins. His surname comes from his ancestors who were of Jewish-German descent.

He grew up on the South Side of Chicago. He did his graduation from the De La Salle Institute. In 1970, he did his graduation in Russian History from Bates College. He also edited the Black Sports Magazine for a year, while quitting it in 1972.

Bryant Gumbel began his television anchoring career in October 1972 with KNBC-TV. He became their sportscaster operating from Los Angeles.

In 1975, NBC Sports made Gumbel the co-host along with jack Buck for National Football League pre-game show GrandStand.

He was with NBC till 1982 and was a TV host to several NBC sporting events which included Major League Baseball, college basketball and the National Football League.

In 1982 he left NBC to do The Today Show. He became the principal anchor of Today. He covered sports events and broadcasted from Vatican City, Europe, Vietnam, South America, and of course, the US. In 1988, he again returned to NBC to do the sports-casting of the Seoul Olympics. In 1990, he covered the PGA Tour. He moved away from the Today show only in 1997, after serving 15 glorious years.

Gumbel also worked with CBS. He started hosting a new primetime news-magazine. This was called Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel and was aired during the 1997–1998. In 1988, one of the episodes, the Reckoning, even won a Peabody Award.
