Arlo Davy Guthrie was born on 10th July 1947 in Coney Island, Brooklyn, in New York City. His father was Woody Guthrie, a folk singer and a composer while his mother was Marjorie Mazia Guthrie. His mother was a professional dancer. His father later died in 1967 from Huntington disease. He has a sister who is a record producer.
Guthrie attended Woodward School up to eighth grade and later to Stockbridge School. He later attended Rocky Mountain College for a short time and later receiving his honorary doctorate from Siena College in 1981 and another one later in 2008 from Westfield State College.

Guthrie married his wife, Jackie Hyde, although she later died in 2012 after suffering from liver cancer. Together they had four children, one son, Abe Guthrie, and three daughters, Annie, Sarah Lee, and Cathy Guthrie. Just like him, all his children are also musicians.
