Bob Woodward was born on 26th of March 1943 in Geneva, Illinois, U.S. to parents, Jane (formerly, Upshur), and Alfred Eno Woodward II. His father worked as a lawyer, who would later become the chief judge of the 18th Judicial Circuit Court.  His parents got divorced when he was just 12 years old, and he, his sister, and his brother were raised by his father, who later re-married.

When it comes to his education, he had attended Yale College with a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship and had studied history and English literature there. He completed his B.A in 1965 and began a 5-year tour of duty in the U.S. Navy.  During his time in the Navy, he served aboard the USS Wright and was one of two officers assigned to move or handle nuclear launch codes the Wright carried in its capacity as a NECPA. He has also served as the communications officer on the USS Fox under Admiral Robert O. Welander.

He was discharged as a lieutenant in August of 1970, and he started taking graduate courses in Shakespeare and international relations at George Washington University. He worked at the Montgomery Sentinel for a year before getting hired by The Washington Post as a reporter in 1971.

Bob Woodward married Kathleen Middlekauff in 1966, who he originally met in high school. However, they got divorced just three years later in 1969. He married Frances Kuper in 1974 but got divorced five years later in 1979. He married Elsa Walsh in 1989, who works as a writer for The New Yorker and is also the author of Divided Lives: The Public and Private Struggles of Three American Women.  Together, they have two daughters, Taliesin Woodward and Diana Woodward.
