He has five brothers, William, Jack, Richard, Steven, and Mark. Coming to his education, he has studied at Ben Davis High School, Indianapolis. After completing his high school education, he then studied at the Herron School of Art for the period between 1964 and 1966. He then went to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts, following which he studied at Yale School of Art, from where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA).
