Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff was born on April 3, 1922, in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. Her father is a music teacher, and his name is William Kappelhoff, and her mother is Alma Sophia Kappelhoff. Doris thought that she was born in 1924, but she believed that it was in 1922 after seeing her birth certificate. She had two brothers that died early before 1960, and their names are Richard Kappelhoff and Paul Kappelhoff.

Her first marriage was from 1941-1943 to Al Jorden, who died in 1967, then married the saxophonist George Weidler who died in 1989, and they were together from 1946-1949. Her third marriage was from 1951-1968 to Martin Melcher, who was a film producer and died in 1968, and her final marriage was from 1976-1981 to Barry Comden, who also died in 2009.
