The launch — which some believe could be announced at parent Reliance Industries’ annual general meeting on July 21— would follow Jio’s likely announcement of a new tariff plan with aggressive price-points over the next couple of days with its 84-day Dhan Dhana Dhan offer — announced on April 11 — drawing to a close, people familiar with the matter said.

Jio is likely to price its 4G feature phone “at a paltry Rs 500 (sub-$8) to lure 2G subscribers to directly switch to 4G”, which implies “Jio subsidising each handset by as much as $10-15 (Rs 650-975)”, Rajiv Sharma, HSBC director and telecoms analyst, said in a note seen by ET.

Analysts expect Jio to dangle a combination of an aggressive tariff offer backed with the mass-market 4G VoLTE feature phone to rev up active subscriber additions.

Reliance Jio is reportedly gearing up to launch a 4G VoLTE-capable feature phone that will cost just Rs. 500. Rumours of such a device have been circulating for a while now, and according to a financial analyst’s research note, it might be unveiled at Reliance Industries Ltd’s annual shareholder meeting which is set to take place on July 21. However, the Jio feature phone might not go on sale till August 15. In addition to that, the company might also launch a new tariff plan targeting feature-phone users priced below Rs. 100. Reliance Jio could be hoping to convert a large number of 2G feature phone users.

Camera Features Jio 500 Mobile

Jio 500 Mobile phone will have a 5MP front end camera and a 2MP back end camera. From the demo version tests, the picture quality has proven to be satisfactory for the price it is being offered.

The low price point will require Reliance Jio to subsidise more than 50 percent of each unit’s cost. The company might have already ordered up to 20 million of these phones from Chinese suppliers, according to the research report. There could be multiple variants of the Jio feature phone, and according to previous rumours there could be different versions with Qualcomm and Spreadtrum processors. Other likely specifications of the 4G VoLTE phone include a 2.4-inch screen, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, a 2-megapixel rear camera and VGA front camera, Wi-Fi, and GPS. Of course Jio’s apps and services will be integrated.

On a related note, Reliance Jio has managed to hold on to its lead in terms of 4G download speeds for six consecutive months. Data from TRAI’s MySpeed app for the month of June shows that it still leads Vodafone, Idea Cellular and Airtel, although the average speeds for all four have actually dropped. Reliance Jio’s average download speed in June was 18.809Mbps, with Vodafone at 12.297Mbps, Idea Cellular at 11.685Mbps and Airtel bringing up the rear with 8.233Mbps. Jio is also still in third place in terms of upload speed, where it is beaten by Idea and Vodafone, with Airtel last again.

After a speedy start, Jio has seen a slow down in the pace of its customer acquisition, mainly due to the limited number of affordable 4G handsets in the market. But phones supporting 4G VoLTE and priced affordably can help the new operator target millions of 2G featurephone users who have been wary of shifting to smartphones due to the affordability factor and lack of use case. Jio has 112.55 million subscribers as of April 2017.

“This launch can create the next wave of disruption in the telecom market,” said a top executive of one of the leading telcos. “Not just us, but the existing players could surely lose a chunk of their low-end voice customers — most of whom are pre-paid – once this 4G featurephone is launched.”
