Oliver Laurence North was born on October 7, 1943, in San Antonio, Texas, to his parents Ann Theresa (née Clancy) and Oliver Clay North. His father was a major in the United States Army.
He spent most of his childhood days in Philmont, New York, and completed his graduation from the Ockawamick Central High School in 1961. Later, he went to the State University of New York at Brockport for two years.
While he was in college, he spent a summer at the United States Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Class in Virginia and was allowed to study at the United States Naval Academy in the year 1963.

Oliver North served as a platoon commander during the initial Vietnam War for which he was awarded two Purple Heart medals, Silver and Bronze star medal. He led the counter-assault against the People’s Army of Vietnam.
After the Vietnam war was over, he became an instructor at the Marine Basic School (1969-74), director of the Northern Training Area, and policy analyst at the Headquarters Marine Corps (1975-78). He was also an operations officer at Camp Lejeune (1978–80).
In 1981, North became a lobbyist and deputy director for political-military affairs and later was promoted to lieutenant colonel. During his tenure, he led a number of missions, including 1983 Beirut barracks bombing, Achille Lauro hijacking, and others.
In May 1988, North submitted a request to retire from the United States Marine Corps. After his retirement, he joined the Republican party and unsuccessfully ran for the United States Senate. He garnered 43 percent of votes while his competitor Democrat Charles Robb won the election with more than 46 percent votes.
North is also the author of several best-selling books such as Under Fire, One More Mission, War Stories—Operation Iraqi Freedom, Mission Compromised, The Jericho Sanction, and The Assassins. In 2013, he published the book American Heroes on the Homefront, which describes the journey of soldiers from the battlefield back to the home front.
