Career
He officially began his political career in 1983 by joining his father’s Christian Democracy (DC) party. Sergio Mattarella was then elected as the member of chamber of deputies. He went to get appointed as the Minister of parliamentary Affairs in 1987 and Minister of education in 1989.
His party was dissolved in 1994 due to corruption scandal. He played an instrumental role in the formation of Italian’s People’s Party (PPI) with other Christian Democrats. Mattarella was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense during 1998 to 2001. He served his tenure as a judge of the constitutional Court before he became the president of the Italian Republic. Sergio was sworn in as the President on 3rd February, 2015.
