Tori is the 3rd child of Mary Ellen and Edison Amos, born on August 22, 1963. She was born at Old Catawba Hospital, which is in Newton, North Carolina. She moved to Baltimore, Maryland, when she was just two years old, and there her father had transplanted his Methodist ministry, which was initially based in Washington DC. Her sister and brother used to take piano lessons, and she did not need them.
When she was just two, she started playing the piano as she was able to reach the height of the piano. Amos was the youngest student who was ever admitted to the preparatory school of the Peabody Conservatory of Music. She later studied the classical piano at the Peabody from the year 1968 to 1974. Her scholarship was discontinued when she was just eleven, and then she was asked to leave. She later asserted that she lost the scholarship because of her deep interest in popular and rock music, and she even disliked reading from sheet music.

Tori got married to the English sound engineer Mark Hawley, and they got married on February 22, 1998. Their daughter was then born in 2000, and her mother died on May 11, 2019.
During her professional career, Amos befriended the author Neil Gaiman, and he became her fan after she referred him in a song of name, “Tear in Your Hand,” and also in some print reviews.
