Trent Franks was born on June 19, 1957, in Uravan, Colorado, which is now a ghost town. He was born with a cleft lip and palate to his parents Juanita and Edward Taylor Franks. When his parents got separated, Franks took on a leadership role at home.
Franks completed his schooling from Briggsdale High School in Colorado in 1976. Later, he shifted to Texas to drill wells along with his brother and best friend. In 1981, he moved to Arizona, where he continued to drill wells.
In 1987, he attended Utah’s National Center for Constitutional Studies and then graduated from the Arizona campus of Ottawa University in 1990.

Trent Franks started his career in 1984, working as an engineer for an oil and gas royalty-purchasing firm. At the same time, he ran for a seat in the Arizona House of Representatives, against Democrat Glenn Davis. Franks campaigned against abortion and in favor of tougher child abuse laws and won the election by 155 votes. He also became the Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Child Protection and Family Preservation.
In 1987, Franks became the head of the Arizona Governor’s Office for Children. In the same year, he founded a non-profit organization called Arizona Family Research Institute and was the executive director for four years. The following year, he was removed from the office.
In 1992, Franks became the chairman of Arizonans for Common Sense. He also became the president of Liberty Petroleum Corporation. In 1994, he ran for Arizona’s 4th congressional district but lost to John Shadegg. He again ran for the election in 2002 and defeated Randy Camacho and remained in the office for five terms till 2010.
In 2006, Franks co-sponsored H.R. 4411, the Goodlatte-Leach Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, and H.R. 4777, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act. At the same time, he signed a pledge sponsored by Americans for Prosperity to vote against any global warming legislation that would increase taxes.
In 2013, Franks proposed a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks, without exceptions for rape and incest. He is also one of the founders of the crisis pregnancy center in Tempe, Arizona.
