Ulysses Lee “Junior” Bridgeman was born on September 17, 1953, in East Chicago, Indiana. He was interested in basketball since childhood and used to play in his school basketball team. He has a brother Sam who went on to have success as a Major League Baseball pitcher. He was a member of the 1971 East Chicago Washington High School Senators basketball team that won the Indiana state high school basketball championship.
Bridgeman attended the University of Louisville, where he played under Coach Denny Crum. He was conferred with Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year for two consecutive years 1974 and 1975.

Bridgeman started his professional basketball career in 1975 when the Los Angeles Lakers drafted him in the 1st Round. Later, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks along with David Meyers, Elmore Smith, and Brian Winters.
He played under coach Larry Costello in 1975-76 and averaged 8.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists. The following year his coach was fired from the team, and Don Nelson was made the new head coach of Milwaukee. Nelson utilized his abilities to build a powerful team and won several division titles (1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984).
After playing for nine years in Milwaukee, Bridgeman was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. He spent two years with the Clippers and later returned to Milwaukee for one season before Bridgeman retired in 1987. He played in 711 games for the Milwaukee Bucks, which is the most in franchise history. Bridgeman played in 849 total NBA games, averaging 13.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.
